Learning Roundtable - Educating the Children of Poverty: Transforming high-poverty schools into high-performing schools

AUSTIN – Nationally-known education researchers and writers Kati Haycock and Karin Chenoweth from The Education Trust will deliver keynote addresses Sept. 12 at the Learning Roundtable – Educating the Children of Poverty.

Sponsored by the State Board of Education and the Texas Education Agency, the free day-long conference will examine ways to transform high-poverty schools into high-achieving schools.

The conference will take place at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Austin Central at 5901 N. IH-35 in Austin. The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:35 p.m. and is open to the public. No advance registration is required.

Finding proven ways to offer children of poverty a high-quality education is a critical issue facing Texas today. Almost six of every 10 students in the Texas public schools are economically disadvantaged.

“There is no more important issue facing our public schools today. Being more effective in educating students, regardless of their life challenges, will make all the difference for our state and, indeed, our nation,” said Donna Bahorich, chair of the State Board of Education.

Featured speakers at the conference include William Parrett and Kathleen Budge, who have received international recognition for their work in the area of school improvement and who are the co-authors of Turning High-Poverty Schools into High-Performing Schools.

Martha Burns, director of neuroscience education at Northwestern University, will discuss neuroscience research and solutions for building learning capacity in the children of poverty.

Other conference topics include: Best Practices in Leading Diverse Schools, Effective Partnerships and Practices, High-Performing Schools Models, Potential of Pathways, Data Driven Decisions for Leadership, and How to Successfully Build School/District/Community Teams and Support Diverse Communities.
