Lufkin State Board of Education member appointed to Commission on Public School Finance

AUSTIN – State Board of Education Chair Donna Bahorich today appointed State Board member Keven Ellis, a Lufkin chiropractor, to the Texas Commission on Public School Finance.

The Texas Legislature authorized the commission this summer when it passed HB 21 during a special legislation session.
 
Under provisions of the bill, the commission is “established to develop and make recommendations for improvements to the current public school finance system or for new methods of financing public schools.”

The law specifies the following committee make-up.
(b) The commission is composed of 13 members, consisting of the following:
(1) four members appointed by the governor;
(2) four members appointed by the lieutenant governor;
(3) four members appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives; and
(4) a member of the State Board of Education, as designated by the chair of that board.

“I’m confident that Keven will be a strong addition to this panel. His background as a president of a local school board of trustees and as a small business owner allow him to bring two vital perspectives to this important work. Congratulations to Dr. Ellis. I’m sure he will represent the board well.” Bahorich said.

Ellis, a former president of the Lufkin school board, said, “I am honored to be appointed by Chair Bahorich to serve as a member of the Commission on Public School Finance. This is a critical issue for Texas and I look forward to working towards a long-term solution that will focus on an effective and efficient system to prepare the next generation of students for the exciting challenges our great state faces.”
