State Board of Education swearing-in ceremony set for Jan. 31

AUSTIN – A swearing-in ceremony for eight recently elected or re-elected State Board of Education members will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 1-104 of the William B. Travis State Office Building in Austin.
Sen. Larry Taylor, chair of the Senate Education Committee, will administer the oath of office to the members.
New members on the board are Georgina C. Pérez, D-El Paso, and Keven Ellis, R-Lufkin.
Re-elected to new four-year terms of office are:
- Ken Mercer, R-San Antonio
- Donna Bahorich, R-Houston
- Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands
- Tom Maynard, R-Florence
- Sue Melton-Malone, R-Robinson
- Marty Rowley, R-Amarillo.
The board will also elect a vice chair and secretary during this meeting.
The board meeting will continue through Friday.
Agenda items include:
- A public hearing and first reading vote on revised English and Spanish language arts and reading Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS);
- A public hearing and first reading vote on efforts to streamline the science TEKS; and
- Discussion of the schedule and instructional materials to be included in Proclamation 2019.
The board meeting and committee meetings will occur in the William B. Travis Building located at 1701 N. Congress Ave. in Austin. The full agenda for the meeting can be found online.
