Statement of Donna Bahorich regarding her reappointment as chair of the State Board of Education
Jan. 24, 2017
Donna Bahorich issued the following statement after Gov. Greg Abbott reappointed her as chair of the State Board of Education:
“I’m honored and humbled that Gov. Abbott has reappointed me to a second two-year term as chair of the State Board of Education. Serving in this capacity is one of the greatest honors of my life. It is also a duty that I take seriously. I’ve done my best to work alongside my colleagues to make the work of the board more accessible to all Texans.”
She noted that during her first term as chair of the board, she spearheaded a listening tour in which she and fellow board members traveled the state gathering input about the state’s testing and accountability systems. She also expanded the state’s extensive instructional materials adoption process by leading the effort to create a publishers’ portal that allows Texans to review proposed textbooks online at any time.
“Donna's exemplary leadership as chair of the State Board of Education over the last two years has allowed Texas to address the educational challenges of our state with collaborative and innovative solutions,” said Gov. Abbott. “Enhancing our education system is imperative to securing a bright future for all Texans and I look forward to continuing to work with Donna to achieve that goal.”
The reappointment is subject to Senate confirmation. The term as chair is effective from Feb. 1, 2017 through Feb. 1, 2019.
