SUMMARY: Discovery Education, Inc. is requesting approval to substitute newer versions of its Discovery Education Science Techbook products for Kindergarten-grade 2, adopted under Proclamation 2014. The substituted content has been reviewed by curriculum subject-area specialists and determined to address the pertinent student expectations in a manner equal to the content initially reviewed and approved by the state review panel.
STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Texas Education Code (TEC), §31.022.
PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION: Science instructional materials from Discovery Education, Inc. were adopted in November 2013 under Proclamation 2014.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES: Discovery Education, Inc. published Discovery Education Science Techbook instructional materials. The affected titles, Discovery Education Science Techbook - Grade K / 9781618285799, Discovery Education Science Techbook - Grade 1 / 9781618285805, and Discovery Education Science Techbook - Grade 2 / 9781618285812, underwent review by state review panels in the summer of 2013, and all were found to have 100% TEKS coverage. The State Board of Education adopted these materials in November 2013.

PUBLIC AND STUDENT BENEFIT: Product substitutions provide updated student and teacher instructional materials.
PROCEDURAL AND REPORTING IMPLICATIONS: The substituted product will be clearly indicated in the educational materials (EMAT) online system.

Approve the request from Discovery Education, Inc. to substitute updated versions of Discovery Education Science Techbook - Grade K / 9781618285799, Discovery Education Science Techbook - Grade 1 / 9781618285805, and Discovery Education Science Techbook - Grade 2 / 9781618285812 products adopted in November 2013 under Proclamation 2014.
