Training New and Existing Members of Local School Boards

COMMITTEE ON SCHOOL INITIATIVES: DISCUSSION
STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION: NO ACTION

SUMMARY: This item will provide the committee an opportunity to discuss the requirements for training new and existing members of local school boards, particularly as it relates to the monitoring and assimilation of data on student outcomes, along with possible changes in the current requirements for qualifying providers of training of local school boards.

STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Texas Education Code (TEC), §11.159.

BOARD RESPONSE: This item is presented for review and comment.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES: About 7,200 Texans currently serve on the boards of trustees for local school districts. The State Board of Education (SBOE) last amended 19 TAC §61.1 effective August 25, 2014.
